Chung Chi College Project E Student Hostel: MiC Visual Mock-Up

07 May, 2025

Chung Chi College is pioneering the implementation of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) technology for its new student hostel development. A full-scale 1:1 physical prototype has been installed at Ho Lawn, adjacent to Chung Chi Piazza, serving as a visualization and simulation platform before construction.

This demonstration unit reproduces all MiC components, including structural joint details and pre-integrated systems. Key technological advantages include:

- Reduction in construction timeline through modular prefabrication

- Decrease in construction waste via factory production

- Reduction in high-risk aerial work

- Reduction in on-site wet trade works leads to a cleaner working environment.

The prototype serves dual purposes: as a technical verification platform for construction teams and as a quality control benchmark for full-scale implementation. This initiative underscores Chung Chi College's leadership in adopting innovative construction methodologies while maintaining its commitment to sustainable campus development.

Updates on Project E Twin Building

23 Jan, 2025

It has been over two months since the Project E Twin Building commenced construction after the foundation stone laying ceremony last October. All Chung Chi-ers are eagerly looking forward to the completion of this future campus landmark. As shown from the above aerial photo, workers have been taking advantage of the recent nice weather to speed up the construction progress, laying the groundwork for the building’s foundation. We will witness significant progress of Project E in the coming months and celebrate the birth of the Twin Building next to the University Station in the academic year of 2026/27, which will bring a brand-new look to not only the College, but also the University.

The total construction cost of the Project E Twin Building is approximately HK$550 million. As of now, the project has raised more than HK$50 million, reaching a quarter of the fundraising target, and is about to reach the 30% milestone. Such excellent progress would not have been possible without the generous donations from our College Board, teachers, students, alumni, and the community! Here, the College would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all supporters, and at the same time, call upon you to continue to mobilize support for this significant campus development project so that we can benefit our future society leaders and give back to the College we love.

We will redouble our fundraising efforts to honour the hard work and dedication of our founders.”

Professor Kwan emphasised the importance of sustainability and green architectural design to Project E. “Young Leaders Award”

The “Young Leaders Award” was launched in 2023/24 to develop all-round leaders. Awarded freshmen will receive scholarships, internship experiences, job shadowing of corporate senior management, and a fireside chat with a C-suite leader. Alumni Mentors will also be assigned to guide and support them. Last year, the eight winning students of the “CUHK Chung Chi College x UOB Young Leaders Award” delivered a series of eight leadership speeches on campus. The speakers were leaders from the local community and business sector, and the event provided an opportunity for Chung Chi students to gain insights from them and get prepared for future social trends and changes. Here is a sharing by the recipient of the 1st cohort of “CUHK CCC x UOB Young Leaders Award”:

Sammi Tin (Professional Accountancy)

“It is such a great honour to be a recipient of the Young Leaders Award. In the process of preparing for the Leadership Speaker Series, I needed to arrange all the details. In addition to planning the entire speech process, I was also required to communicate and coordinate with different stakeholders, which was a challenging task. I am very grateful to my Alumni Mentor and College staff members for their guidance and support, as well as to the award sponsor and all parties that contribute to the Young Leaders Award, which has brought me an extremely fulfilling freshman experience.”

To expand the scope of our scholarship and benefit more students, please donate to the “Student Development Fund” (Scholarship) or sponsor our scholarship programmes, which will help students develop their strengths and pursue their dreams, enabling them to become all-round young leaders in society!

I am proud of becoming braver and stronger.”

Chung Chi’s “EYE Award” (Excel Yourself through Exploration) was established to encourage students to explore the world by subsidising them to join the overseas programmes organised by the College. “FLY Award” (Find a Learning opportunity Yourself) aims to enrich Chung Chi students’ international exposure and motivate students to explore their potential through participating in overseas activities they are interested in and organised by recognised institutes or organisations.

16 Jan, 2023

Dear Board Members, Teachers, Staff, and Alumni,

Chinese New Year is around the corner! May I wish you all a joyful and prosperous Year of the Rabbit!

Since I took up the Chairman of the Chung Chi College Board of Trustees in August 2021, I have been receiving enormous support from board members, staff and alumni, driving the College forward to the highest excellence. In conformity with the spirit of the College motto “In Pursuit of Excellence”, three aspects of qualities - “Mastery of Both Academics and Athletics”, “Cultivation of Morality and Service Spirit”, and “Spirituality Enhancement” have been proposed as the expected attributes for our college students. In October last year, I had the honour to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Chung Chi College with all CC-ers, while witnessing the completion of the Student Development Complex, of which $250 million of the total construction cost was contributed and raised by the College. I felt heartened and delighted since the Complex, which took five years to build, has solved the long-term problem of indoor activity space shortage within the College campus.

At the 70th Anniversary Celebration Banquet last year, I announced a major campus development plan, tentatively named "Project E", which is initiated to redevelop the staff quarters Block E adjacent to the University Station, into a twin-block building. The high block will be a student hostel with about 300 places, while the low block includes replacement staff quarters (17,000 square feet), an alumni activity centre (2,200 square feet) linking to a sky garden, Digital Culture and Art Creativity Centre (3,500 square feet), among others. This project will not just improve the facilities of the College, but also promote and pass on the spirit of Chung Chi, and bring together the College students, staff, and alumni.

An architect has been appointed to design the building, and tenders for construction will be invited in the fourth quarter of this year. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, at the 75th anniversary of the College. The revised construction cost is estimated at $550 million. After netting out the government subsidy of $200 million for the partial construction cost of the student hostel, the $100 million from the matching fund and the $70 million from the staff quarters fund agreed by the Finance Committee of the College Board, still, a total of $180 million need to be raised from CC-ers and the community. The fundraising campaign of this project was kicked off at the 70th Anniversary Celebration Banquet with four trustees pledging $2.8 million, while the College will hold a series of publicity and fundraising activities in the coming four years to achieve the fundraising target of $180 million. Apart from giving your active participation and generous support, you are encouraged to share our enthusiasm and educational vision with your family and friends to solicit their support for Chung Chi and our Project E.

Project E is one of the largest development projects of the College since its establishment 70 years ago and will be an important milestone for the College’s development. I firmly believe that with the full support and determination of CC-ers, we will overcome all difficulties ahead and achieve our target. For the introduction, fundraising plan, and acknowledgement of the project, please refer to the brochure. Apart from participating in various fundraising activities, we welcome everyone to donate online anytime. For enquiries, please contact Dr. Jane Cheung, College Secretary of Chung Chi College (Tel: +852-3943 6450, Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. May I wish you all good health and a glorious year ahead!

Yours faithfully,
Norman CHAN
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Chung Chi College

New Milestone Facilitates Student Development

23 Sep, 2022

In this new school year, both students and the campus of Chung Chi sparkle, as we are all about to reach anew milestone with the soon-commencing Chung Chi Student Development Complex (CCSDC).

The prologue of this project began in 2014, when the College saw the severe shortage of indoor activityspaces for her students. It was suggested that the two old staff quarters built in the 1960s, namely Block D and G, be redeveloped, into a new facility to cater for student s’ whole-person development.

Following the demolition of two blocks of staff quarters and the kick-off of CCSDC fundraising campaignin 2017, the Groundbreaking Ceremony of CCSDC was held in the consecutive year to commence such avisionary construction project.

Earlier in this March, having overcome several suspensions of work and delays due to COVID-19, the twin blocks were eventually topped out and ready for a series of interior work which were expected to be completed by October. To inaugurate the long-awaited Student Development Complex, the College is now proud to announce that the Grand Opening cum Naming Ceremonies of CCSDC will be convened in the next month to celebrate the 71st Anniversary of Chung Chi!

Introduction of the "Kilo-Tile Dream" Mosaic Wall of Chung Chi Student Development Complex

20 Jul, 2021

At the atrium of the Kunkle Student Centre, Low Block of the Student Development Complex, visitors will find a threestorey mosaic wall, portraying vividly a famous Chung Chi landmark - the Chung Chi Gate. The mosaic wall will assemble over twenty thousand glass tiles, each engraved with the names of supporters of the "Kilo-Tile Dream" Campaign, showing the joint effort of donors to make the construction project of the Complex a success.

To optimise the design of the mosaic wall and integrate arts elements into it, the College has especially invited Dr. Kan Kit Keung (1966 / Physics), a renowned artist in Chinese painting and calligraphy, to illustrate for the wall. With his artistry, Dr. Kan showcased his ink and watercolour painting of the established Chung Chi Gate and the breathtaking Ma On Shan with great harmony.

Having learnt Chinese painting and calligraphy under various masters, Dr. Kan has conducted and participated in over a hundred exhibitions. Masterpieces of Dr. Kan are collected by numerous museums and organisations across the city and the globe. Dr. Kan has been a keen Chung Chi alumnus and paid huge effort in promoting arts to our students. Two solo exhibitions of Dr. Kan were held in Chung Chi. Moreover, he also served as the College resident-artist, the patron of our calligraphy competition, and for multiple times the instructor of Chinese calligraphy and painting classes. Dr. Kan’s dedication towards the College and his passion in Chinese calligraphy and painting are truly remarkable.

The 3-storey Mosaic Wall not only signifies contributions of our donors, but also the College's landmark – the Chung Chi Gate.

🔶 More about the Kunkle Student Centre:

The late Rev. Dr. John Stewart Kunkle dedicated his life to Christian higher education in southern China. During their stay in Hong Kong, The Rev. Dr. Kunkle and Mrs. Kunkle (Dr. Julia P. Mitchell) invited The Rev. Hurbert Pommerenke for the purchase of "Little Tao Fung Shan", and the three built houses for their own residence. Their land and properties were then gifted to the College in the 1970s, and later developed into a low-density private housing estate, bringing a reserve fund for College's later development. The College resolved to name the Low Block, which is located right next to the University's Pommerenke Student Centre, after The Rev. Dr. Kunkle, to commemorate their contributions to the College.

Conquering the Outbreak, Together We Back Our Students

16 Mar, 2020

It is believed, here at Chung Chi College,
every student should be given same opportunities to equip themselves through learning from the experienced  and to grow from shared experience.

However, those carrying a financial burden could be deprived of such opportunities. The unaffordable cost of academic studies and learning opportunities may drive students away especially because of their financial hardship…

For this, thankfully, Chung Chi College has been able to provide students with financial resources to grasp these opportunities. Our College Bursary, Financial aid, Hostel Bursary, Student Emergency Fund, and local / overseas learning activity subsidies are there for students to apply whenever they come across financial needs, thus can ease their burden and allow them a balanced development.

It is estimated that, our needy students might suffer even more from the economic downturn attributed to the outbreak. In particular for some living on part-time jobs on irregular basis, the outbreak strikes even more severely!

The how should I do to lend the students a hand?

  • Donating to Chung Chi's "Student Development Fund: You may empower the College to run kinds of financial aid, and thus lend your support to the needy;

  • The 2020-21 Budget  proposed to disburse HK$ 10,000 to Hong Kong permanent residents aged 18 or above for financial burden relief. Perhaps you might consider sharing the disbursement in donation, and too in emergency aid to our students!
  • The Budget  proposed a 100% (HK$ 20,000 max. each) reduction in salary tax, tax under personal assessment and profit tax. Transforming your saving of this tax reduction into donation would be highly appreciated!

Fiscal year 2019/20 soon ends on 31 March 2020.
Not only does it contribute to the College's all-round education, your donation (not less than HK$ 100) also ensures you an official receipt for tax-exempt.

Together let us conquer the outbreak, and offer our juniors a strong force to strive against this tough challenge!

Strong And Sturdy・We Are CHUNG CHI

06 Dec, 2019

A few weeks ago, The Chinese University of Hong Kong encountered heavy challenges, including charging across the campus, resulting in different degrees of damage of facilities. Offices of CUHK therefore remained closed for two weeks. As all departments and units resumed operation on 25 Nov, offices of Chung Chi College resumed normal operation on the same day as well.

Since then, the University and Colleges have exhausted all sorts of effort to suit the campus up. Facilities across our campus encountered some damages, including graffiti which calls for time to be removed. Yet thanks to the effort of frontline staff members, now the College are mostly safe from obstacles. The walkway near the College Administration Building is also replaced with concrete. At the same time you may again find tranquility on campus as Grisha the cat wandering around the grass field near the Madam SH Ho Hall.

Thank you, dear friends, alumni, staff and students, for your care, blessing and precious advices to both the University and our College, as well as enquiries on how to support the campus restoration work. After the incident, the campus of Chung Chi is still– as it has always been – pleasant and lovely. Wishing all the best in future, we look forward to walk along with all our staff, students and alumni in the new semester, as well as the start of 2020.

The campus is constantly maintained and renewed through the allocation from Campus Development Fund. Your dedication towards College physical facilities is most welcomed. Please simply approach Ms. Sue-ane Leung (3943 6498; This email address is being protected from spambots.
